I’d like introduce a new feature here at The Healthy Skeptic. Once a month (or so) I’ll invite you to submit any questions you have or topics you’d like to see addressed on the blog. I’ll keep a list of your requests and add them into the mix of content I have planned for the coming month.

Wondering whether saturated fat and cholesterol actually cause heart disease? Not sure what to feed your kids to support their growth and development? Want to know the truth about fluoride? Confused about the difference between carotenes and Vitamin A? Looking for a good way to cook liver? It’s all fair game!

    I like the “what to feed children” idea. But it has to be food they will actually EAT.

    I’ve also been wondering about how to incorporate more raw foods into my diet. I know about lacto-fermentation, but I want to know more about the why’s and how’s of sprouting, juicing, and wheatgrass.

    Thanks for your suggestion!

    A “Nourishing Our Children” post is definitely at the top of my list. I’ll go into detail there, but in short, the good news is that saturated fat and cholesterol are two very important nutrients for growth and development. I don’t know too many kids that don’t like butter, cheese and cream. :)

    One of the benefits of a nutrient-dense diet (whether for kids or adults) is that they’re full of foods most people love! This is in stark contrast to the bland, unsatisfying low-fat fare currently en vogue.

    Which is better for ones health: distilled water or mineral water? Does distilled water leach minerals from the body? Are the “inorganic” minerals in mineral water actually toxic? There are various claims made about both, and the arguments back and forth strike me as more religion than science. Personally, I listen to my palate, which tells me that distilled water tastes awful.

    what’s the deal with iodine? is it possible to get enough from foods alone? what supplements are the most effective and if supplementing iodine are there other supplements that need to be taken with it in order to get the most out of it?

    also, regarding minerals: colloidal or angstrom? which one is more effective and easily absorbed?

    Ideas/recipes for cooking liver would be great!
    Best options/brands of filters recommended for removing fluoride from water.
    Sun protection facts regarding use of sesame, coconut, other oils.

    Where can I find a lab in Manhattan Beach area that can give me a full report on my cholesterol, full blood analysis, and the CA125?

    Hi Jane,

    All of the labs can do that. It’s more a question of finding a practitioner to order and then interpret those tests. I’m unfortunately not aware of any MDs or other practitioners doing that type of testing. I’m sure there are some – I just don’t know who they are since I haven’t lived down there in so long.

    Another option is to go to Directlabs.com and order the tests yourself. You order the tests, and they email you a lab requisition which you print out and then take to a nearby lab. I’d still recommend finding some help interpreting the results, though. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    I like to incorporate good ideas from wherever I find them, even if the author is not strictly Paleo. Now I find conflicting advice concerning when to eat breakfast for maximum fat loss. Martin Berkhan of Leangains says that is best to postpone eating breakfast as long as possible to extend the fat-burning that takes place overnight. Tim Ferriss says it’s important to eat protein within 30 minutes of waking to create a hormonal advantage that will last through the day. What do you say?

    Do I need to limit my fat intake at all to lose weight? Typical breakfast is 3 eggs, 2 yolks, 4 pieces of thick-cut, meaty bacon, and 1 TB of butter on 1 piece of Ezekial toast. Lunch is 8 oz sausage and veggies. Dinner is 8 oz. ground beef and veggies. No snacks. 12-14 hour fast.

    Any ideas on the new fad involving krill? Certainly not in our usual diet, but is it better (as it is claimed) than cod liver oil. best wishes, steven
