By on July 28, 2011 in Uncategorized | 74 comments

I'm happy to announce that my wife Elanne gave birth at 9:44pm on July 23, 2011 to a beautiful baby girl. Sylvie was born at home (in our bed, as a matter of fact!) weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. She's healthy and doing very well as she explores this wide world outside the womb, and is diligently perfecting her breastfeeding technique. Elanne and I are tired, as expected, but overflowing with joy and wonder. All the ...

In this article I'm going to review evidence on the safety of routine ultrasound and Doppler scanning, and make recommendations based on that research. The potential adverse effects of ultrasound According to Australian family ...

Natural childbirth IIa: is ultrasound necessary & effective in pregnancy?

By on July 11, 2011 in Babies & Kids, Fertility, Pregnancy & Childbirth | 27 comments

"The routine use of ultrasound in pregnancy is the biggest uncontrolled experiment in history." Beverly Beech, birth activist In the first article in this series on natural childbirth, I presented evidence that - contrary to popular belief - hospital birth is no safer than home birth. I'd like to begin this next article by telling you what it is not. It is not a blanket condemnation of ultrasound, nor is it a judgment of women who choose routine ultrasound ...

Episode 13 – Dr. Emily Deans on Nutrition and Mental Health

By on July 4, 2011 in Podcasts | 13 comments

Dr. Emily Deans' Evolutionary Psychiatry blog has quickly become one of my favorites over the past year. It's rare to find a psychiatrist that acknowledges the role of nutrition in mental and behavioral health at all, much less one that approaches these topics from an evolutionary perspective. This week Dr. Deans joins us on the podcast to discuss the role of Paleo nutrition in mental health. Topics covered include: The link between diet and Alzheimer's Can nutritional changes effect ...
