Blast from the Past

A new study showed that lean or obese, participants maintained overall lower insulin and increased insulin sensitivity with a new source of resistant starch: green bananas. And participants who were obese even saw improvements in their body weight after four weeks of supplementation with green banana starch.

These improvements in metabolic health from resistant starch are a big reason why replacing refined carbohydrates with natural plant-based carbohydrates can help those with type 2 diabetes and obesity improve their blood sugar control and potentially lose weight, without having to completely eliminate all carbohydrates from their diets.

For the Foodies

  1. Hi Chris,

    I’m new to your website and I enjoy how you are able to take topics and relay the information in literature articles in a way that lay men can understand (I’m a biology grad student and I find one of the most difficult aspects is scientific communication to people that may not be scientifically literate). Anyway, my question for you does not deal with this article (there’s probably a higher probability of a response from a newer post than posting into an older post). I’m a part of a group on Facebook that preaches healthy and alternative lifestyles, and one of the things that they talk about are these new “rope worms” that people have found in their stools after doing many cleanses and enemas. I don’t think that they are anything other than a combination of mucus, undefeated food, gut microbiota and in digested fiber (since a lot of them are on high fiber diets). Have you heard about these and if so, what are your thoughts on them?

    you don’t seem to have ever mentioned tiger nuts, they are a great source of resistant starch and also are believed to be one the original foods consumed by our ancient ancestors – what are your thoughts ? Would you say tiger nuts are suitable for AIP ?


  3. I’ve been getting my resistant starch from cooked/refridgerated rice made into a rice pudding. Tastes great cold and you don’t lose any of the benefits of the resistant starch as you would from eating it warmed up.

  4. The most interesting part about the banana starch study is that it may be possible to add banana starch to other products that contain starch such as pasta.

    I will have to read your staff’s articles on resistant starches. The biggest complaint I get is that people have to cut down on pasta. If we could make better at least there would be an alternative.
