I just wanted to give you all a quick update on the blog and podcast. As you’ve no doubt noticed, I haven’t been writing or publishing new episodes as regularly as I usually do. If you’ve guessed that has something to do with the recent birth of my daughter Sylvie, you’d be right. 🙂
I feel like I’m just now getting back in the saddle. The plan is to return to a more regular schedule for the podcast and blog. Starting next Tuesday, a new episode of the podcast will be published every other week. Blog articles will be published – for the most part – every other week on either Thursdays or Fridays.
Since I’ve retired The Healthy Skeptic name here on the blog, Danny and I are also planning to rename the podcast. We haven’t settled on a name yet (if you have any ideas, leave them in the comments section.) This won’t affect the feed or your subscription to it. One day you’ll just notice that it has a different graphic and name.
I’ve also got a couple of exciting projects in the works. It’s too early to say much about them, but I can give you a little hint. One is related to weight loss for those who’ve tried everything without success and the other is related to creating your own customized Paleo-type diet – rather than following a canned approach. I’ll keep you posted as they develop!
Happy Fall!
Hi sorry I don’t know where else to ask this and it’s very important. I have been taking relatively large doses of selenium and it has been helping with my fatigue. I notice the effect within a few hours.
I am guessing the effects would either be from helping T4 turn to T3 or from raising glutathione.
Could you please tell me which of these is more likely or if you think it may be due to some other effect. Thanks so much.
I’d like to sign up as a new patient, but the New Patient Interest Form link doesn’t work! Suggestion?
Unfortunately the wait list is full. There will be more opportunities to become a patient in the near future. Thanks for your patience!
Chris, I just learned my mother has Demintia, first stage. Do you know or have you heard of reversing or controlling this with a paleo approach? She is 80. Was sharp until she got sick and they gave her antibiotics. She has a heart problem and is on Coumadin. They said that the antibiotics with the Coumadin advanced this.
I bought the healthy baby code about two and a half years ago and now can’t see how to access it with my pass code?? Please advise!
Susie, please email [email protected] and they will help you out.
Just read an article on http://www.medscape.com. It’s about an article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Here’s the first paragraph. The message – bad food is good for America!
Processed Food Is Vital in US Diet, Nutrition Society States
Marlene Busko
August 05, 2014
Processed foods are an important part of the US food supply and ensure that Americans have food to eat (food security) and food that meets nutritional guideline requirements (nutrition security), according to a controversial scientific statement issued by the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) and published in the June issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
I am a Holistic Health Coach (Trained at IIN) and have been Paleo for two years. My question is regarding my stepdaughter, whose mother is a labor and delivery nurse. As such, I think she is skeptical that I have any knowledge in this area because she has the degree and I do not.
My step-daughter is 8 years old and lives with us half the week. She eats Paleo with us. When she is with her mom, she eats more of a standard American diet (boxed/packaged/processed foods and drinks with artificial ingredients, etc.) Shortly after birth, our daughter developed digestive issues. She would withhold pooping for days and when she did poop it was often accompanied by screaming and bloody tearing. She was put on Miralax for several years until this situation cleared up.
She has also suffered from the bumpy chicken-skin on her upper arms for as long as I can remember. She has been diagnosed with eczema, which recently became impetigo. She will develop small patchy itchy spots around her mouth or her eyes. I can’t remember a time in this child’s life where she has not had one or all of these symptoms, requiring ointments and steroidal creams.
Often, when I pick her up after she has been with her mom, she has had a snack such as crackers or a granola bar and then usually falls asleep on the 30 minute drive from her mom’s to our house (our other kids don’t). I’ve been keeping track, and this child is also sick more often than the other two.
Here’s the problem. I believe this child is developing or has leaky gut, has SIBO, or at the very least has some food sensitivities that are causing all of her symptoms. This scares the hell out of me, because I believe that if this is true and we do nothing to eliminate the likely culprits, this child will develop long term illnesses.
Help! Are there specific papers, articles, podcasts which you would recommend to her mom that would help me convince her that food is the problem? I have many collected as part of my own library, but I’m looking for a couple of really specific ones that would help a skeptical RN see there might be something we can do other than medicate with creams.
If I cannot convince her to try elimination, are there things I could do 3 days a week to help offset the damage being done the rest of the week?
Unfortunately, the pediatrician did the basic allergy tests and the dermatologist said that the issues is just that our child has “fair skin” and this is just the way it is…no link to food. These medical professionals, along with the medical professional MOM, seem to trump what I instinctively know to be true: it’s in the food!

Thanks Chris!
Can you please tell me if you did go ahead with the tetanus jab for Sylvie? I have a completely unvaccinated 2 year old who loves gardening, digging in soil and horses so I am considering a single tetanus jab for her. What do you think?
My husband and I are planning on trying to get pregnant in the next month or so. We have been doing Hot Yoga for about 4 months now, and I really enjoy it. It is also the first thing I have been able to do 4+ times a week consistently . One of the teachers at our studio said she did Hot Yoga all through her pregnancy and said it was great and saw no reason for concern, but most websites we look at say it is not safe, but they do not really say why.
I was hoping you might have an opinion on this.
Hi Chris
I got your contact details from Robb Wolf. I have a question to do with thyroid. I am following the paleo lifestyle and feel great. 20 years ago i had radio active treatment to kill off my thyroid, i have recently had my 12 monthly blood work and my levels are all great. All the articles i read have to do with still having an existing thyroid gland, what do you suggest to include in my daily food intake for not having a gland at all? Also in 2008 i had a total hysterectomy due to ESS cancer (low grade). Because it was total i have no ovaries at all. I refuse to take the hormones the doctors want me to take to keep any further cancer at bay, the receptors of the cancer were insensitive to both female hormones. To be truthfull i have never been more healthy as i focus on staying well and keeping my emotions and mind under controll, meaning i don’t let them run out of control.
I would reallly appreciate if you can suggest anything i can add into my daily eating plan that would support my due to the above lack.
Be blessed and thanks heaps.
Cheryl
Hi Chris,
Hoping to have another talk about thyroid…I realize it is a subject you’ve spoken and written about time and time again but I am still at a loss of where I should go for help. For changes in thyroid (doubling of TSH to a value >4 and lowering of free T4 (0.8) along with increased body fat despite rigorous diet and exercise modifications, I am looking for help. My OBGYN did not want to address the changes in lab values because they were still ‘in range’. I am devastated by the increased body fat, as I was comfortably sitting at 8-10% body fat for over a year when all of the sudden things started changing. I have religiously tracked other markers over the past year, including female sex hormones, cortisol (4 point), DHEA, blood glucose). Natural ways to address this issue or try to find a medical practitioner who will ‘treat’ it with….armour thyroid? Any thoughts or further talks would be so appreciated. LOVE the wealth of information you provide…thanks!
I would like your insightss on canary seed milk.
Thank you very much
Chris
Can you point me to any sources of information concerning elevated CRP and fibrinogen? From what I’ve learned so far, these are more reliable predictors of heart disease, but can’t find anything about correcting them.
Thanks,
Bryan
Hi Chris. On Sean’s show earlier this year you made a statement that we should not worry about Mercury in fish. You stated that most fish are high enough in Selenium to offset the negative effects of the mercury. Two quick questions: I can’t seem to support your comments that most fish are high in selenium. Can you support that with studies? Can you please provide or point me in the right direction for research that supports your comments that Selenium will protect us against the harmful effects of the mercury? Including pregnant women? Thanks for you time. Steve

Travis: probably the best bet would be to take a research methodology course at your local community college, or try to find one online. It’s much easier to learn that way than from a book.
Hi Chris,
I’m a HUGE fan of your work and have been about 80% paleo for about 8 months now. I’ve lost about 30 lbs and am a crossfitter (about 4x a week). I seem to have reached a stalling point in my journey to a healthier me, I can’t loose the extra fat! I’m hovering around 24% (and have been here for about 4 months) but have a goal to be sub 20% by the end of the year (I currently weigh about 153 and am 5’7.5″). I’m wondering if maybe I should take a closer look into investigative medicine. I’m generally pretty symptom free but do seem to wake up for about an hour or so around 3 am, I get occasional skin rashes/hives. I’ve never had ANY type of blood test done and am curious to know if you can recommend a Dr. in the Santa Barbara area. I’d also be interested in a consultation from you.
Thanks so much for all you do and looking forward to hearing back from you! Check out my blog http://www.sheshredss.wordpress.com 🙂

Lauren
Hi Lauren,
I don’t know anyone in Santa Barbara, unfortunately. I’d be happy to work with you, but I have a 9-week wait list for new patients currently. If you’re okay with that, head over to http://chriskresser.com/appointment to set up an initial consult.

Hallo Chris,
maybe you could write about your experience with your patients with Iodine and Hashimoto? I would really looking forward :). Do you or your wife take Iodine?
Greetings 🙂
The Health Detective might work for the podcast, although it suggests you would be trying to solve hard cases. That is a big part of what you do, but you don’t do that on the podcast (although I suppose you could–that would be interesting.
The Healthy Human Code is good for an eventual book title, but not so much for the podcast.
George, what changes did you make to your paleo diet to reduce your uric acid levels?
