UTIs can be caused by poor hygiene, impaired immune function, the overuse of antibiotics, the use of spermicides, and sexual intercourse. The most common cause, accounting for about 90 percent of all cases, is the transfer of Escherichia coli bacteria from the intestinal tract to the urinary tract.
For those of you who have experienced a UTI, there isn’t much you wouldn’t do to avoid another one. While I personally have never had a UTI, my patients have told me how symptoms like pain, burning, nausea, and even bloody urine can be debilitating, and for those who get chronic UTIs, the fear of infection can be enough to prevent engagement in any activities that could trigger one. For people who get them frequently, sometimes a specific cause cannot even be pinpointed. This can be frustrating and scary.
Fortunately, there are a few methods of natural UTI treatment and prevention that have worked extremely well for my patients, to the point where they no longer worry about getting a UTI.
These treatments don’t require a prescription, are inexpensive, and are completely drug-free. While your doctor may not know about them, I hope this article will help you completely avoid UTIs—or at least significantly reduce their frequency and severity. I recommend working with a Functional Medicine practitioner who is focused on treating the root cause of your UTIs.
UTIs can be debilitating, but it is possible to get relief without requiring a prescription. Check out this article for five ways to cure UTIs without antibiotics. #functionalmedicine #wellness #chriskresser
What Is the Standard Treatment for a UTI?
Doctors typically use antibiotics to treat UTIs, and the type and duration depend on your health condition and the type of bacterium found in your urine. (2) Commonly prescribed antibiotics are:
- Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim)
- Amoxicillin
- Ampicillin
- Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
These antibiotics are often unnecessary and may cause more problems in the future by destroying the beneficial bacteria that prevent pathogenic bacteria from growing. Long-term use of antibiotics can also lead to antibiotic resistance in strains of bacteria like E. coli in the gut, and a UTI caused by these bacteria will be even more challenging to eliminate and can cause more serious issues like a kidney or bladder infection.
Furthermore, antibiotics do very little to prevent the infection from happening in the first place. So, while drugs may be an easy fix for the short term, in the long run, you will continue to be susceptible to UTIs, and these infections may be worse than if you had never taken a course of antibiotics in the first place!
Curing and Preventing UTIs Naturally: D-Mannose
Treating UTIs with D-Mannose
D-mannose is by far the most effective supplement for both treatment and prevention of UTIs. Similar to glucose in structure, D-mannose is a naturally occurring sugar that is found in a number of fruits, including apples, blueberries, and cranberries. (3) This sugar is the reason that cranberry juice has been commonly recommended as a UTI treatment, though it is far easier to get the recommended dosage from a supplement. D-mannose is effective because it attaches to E. coli bacteria, causing them to stick to each other and preventing them from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract. (4) The bacteria can then easily be eliminated from the body during urination.
D-mannose, even in large quantities, does not cause any adverse effects, and cannot be metabolized the way other sugars can, meaning this supplement is safe for people with diabetes and others who are avoiding sugar for any reason. This treatment is also safe for children and the elderly.
Symptom relief can be seen as quickly as the following day, and most symptoms of UTI are generally resolved after 48 hours of treatment. Additionally, taking D-mannose during a time where you feel you are most prone to UTIs, such as before intercourse or during prolonged antibiotic treatment, can help prevent a UTI from ever developing in the first place. This is especially helpful for those who are prone to chronic UTIs and want to be able to engage in normal life activities without fear of infection.
The typical dose of D-mannose for UTI treatment is 500 mg, in capsule or powder form, taken with or in a glass of water or juice every two to three hours for five days. It is a good practice to continue taking the supplement even after symptoms have diminished to ensure complete elimination of the bacteria in the urinary tract. This dose can also be taken as a preventive, or prophylactic, method.
While there has not been any peer-reviewed research to support the effectiveness of D-mannose in treating or preventing UTIs, clinical and anecdotal experience suggests it is highly effective for the majority of infections, both acute and chronic. Some of my patients who have used D-mannose as a UTI treatment method have even described its effects as “miraculous”—so it’s definitely worth a shot!

Four Alternative Treatments for Chronic UTIs
One caveat with D-mannose is that it is only effective with UTIs caused by E. coli infection. While this accounts for about 90 percent of cases, 10 percent will not benefit from this treatment. In this case, supplements that help disrupt biofilms can be useful in treating and preventing UTIs.
Biofilms are an accumulation of microorganisms and their extracellular products forming structured communities attached to a surface such as the lining of the urogenital tract. (5) The development of a biofilm can make infections extremely hard to treat, since they commonly return shortly after treatment is stopped.
The antibacterial resistance of pathogenic biofilms is one of the major reasons why those who get a UTI are highly susceptible to getting more in the future—if the biofilm is not completely eliminated, the infection will eventually return at some point.
1. InterFase Plus and Biofilm Defense
This is why the use of biofilm disruptors can be helpful for preventing the recurrence of chronic UTIs. The biofilm disruptors that I recommend to my patients are InterFase Plus from Klaire Labs or Biofilm Defense from Kirkman. These contain specialized enzymes to disrupt the biofilm matrix embedding potential of pathogens, and dissolve the sugar and fibrin components of most pathogenic biofilms. By destroying the biofilms, the recurrence of UTIs despite proper hygiene can be reduced. (6)
2. Lauricidin
Lauricidin is another supplement that may help in treating UTIs, particularly those that are caused by types of bacteria other than E. coli. Lauricidin (a proprietary form of monolaurin) has antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial activity, and is specific against pathogenic bacteria so it won’t disrupt beneficial bacteria in the gut. It is highly effective at combating gram-positive bacteria in the families of: (7)
- Streptococcus
- Staphylococcus
- Corynebacterium
- Listeria
- Bacillus
- Clostridium
It works by disturbing the integrity of the bacterial cell membrane, blocking replication and making it easier for the immune system to destroy the pathogen. Lauricidin is only helpful, however, for UTIs not caused by E. coli, which is gram-negative and has a different kind of outer cell membrane than gram-positive bacteria.
3. Nattokinase
Nattokinase is another enzyme that has been shown to dissolve biofilms. (8) Produced by the bacteria found in the fermented food natto, this enzyme is proteolytic and can help break down the fibrin proteins that maintain the structure of biofilms.
Because of its fibrin-breaking ability, it’s important that nattokinase supplements are not taken by people with bleeding disorders, or by people who are taking Coumadin (warfarin), aspirin, or any other drug that influences blood clotting, unless supervised by a physician.
4. Apolactoferrin
Apolactoferrin (or lactoferrin) is one more supplement that I recommend to my patients with recurrent UTIs. This multifunctional protein lactoferrin is a component of the immune system with antimicrobial activity, and is part of the innate defense, found mainly in secretions and mucosal surfaces. (9)
Lactoferrin has been shown to block pathogenic biofilm development by binding to iron and causing the bacteria to “wander” across surfaces instead of forming cell clusters and biofilms. (10, 11) One study found that the amount of E. coli bacteria in the kidneys and bladder of mice was significantly reduced 24 hours after oral lactoferrin treatment, compared to a control group. (12) More research is necessary to demonstrate the effectiveness of lactoferrin in treating UTIs, but I believe it is worth trying, especially if dealing with chronic UTIs.

My mother has had indwelling catheter for 4 years now. Have kept her E coli controlled through D-mannose, but recently she developed a severe UTI with the gram negative bacteria Providencia Rettgeri in addition to 3 strains of E coli and Enteroccocus. That forced us to do a round of Macrobid. That brought her down to only 1 strain of E coli plus continuation of P. Rettgeri. I have hunted online but find zero mention of any natural treatment for P. Rettgeri. Does anyone have experience with it? The first symptom that it produced was stealing of my other’s ability to speak properly. Two months later, she still essentially cannot speak properly anymore (sometimes she is okay, other times impossible, but usually in between). She continues to sleep many more hours than “usual,” though she is no longer symptomatic in the classic sense of fever or low volume output. She never had classic UTI delirium. Her urine volume has improved and has less sediment, which persisted so viscous after Macrobid that it was clogging the catheter after only 4 or 5 days. Am desperate to find a way for her to regain her ability to speak intelligibly. Any input??
PRAISE GOD FOR D MANNOSE!!!!
? I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT HOW GREAT AND FAST IT WORKS!! It is the first thing that has worked excellent for me:) and super fast, usually only after 24 hrs, but relief begins for me within 2 hrs. I have tried other natural things too, such as Oil of Oregano but D mannose has by far worked faster and better!! I had a past history of chronic UTIs over the years and unfortunately then, did not have insurance, so often I did not have the money to be seen by a doctor for treatment. I would have UTIs so bad that there was blood in my urine, even blood clots when I would urinate. Severe pain, burning, and spasms and urgency to pee every 5 minutes that was only a few drops, back pain etc. I am happy to say that I have not returned to a doctor for antibiotics and will not since using D Mannose:) I am actually a nurse now and useamy home and natural remedies. God has blessed, and even my children now have not been to their doctor for sickness in over 4 years now. I also share information with friends/family and also my hospice patients, and have had some that have chosen D Mannose. It is especially good for the patients with Alzhemier’s that cannot report their pain or symptoms. The family makes a request to the MD, MD gives the order, and they get started. It has been an answered prayer ?
I have chronic UTIs. I get it from having sexual contact from my husband. I don’t know why. He is not circumcised. Could that be it.
Val, I read an article some years ago that may help with that. Urinate and then wash the area with soap and water really good before sexual intercourse. Also afterward, urinate and wash the area with soap and water again. Urinating helps flush bad bacteria out. The urethra of a female is much shorter than a male’s, so bacteria has a shorter distance to travel. Hope this helps you. Wouldn’t hurt to have your spouse do the same. Get D Mannose:) Can find it at ‘Vitamin Shoppe” if you have one nearby.
OMG, yes. I had a relationship with a man for a few years who was not circumcised and I had quite a few UTI’s. It’s because of taking CIPRO for two of them that I now have ongoing issues with nerve pain and hormone problems.
I’m on my way to the store to get the Mannose stuff:-).
Make your husband take a thorough shower before you let him touch you again! You too! My boyfriend and I always shower before sex and while it takes away the spontaneity, it’s worth knowing we’re clean.
Nope, my husband is circumcised and it still happened to me. As I found out, it’s about the bacteria in our vagina and not from the penis :/
Yep, same here. My husband is circumcised and I get UTI’s if I don’t immediately get up after sex and go urinate.
Currently experiencing UTI symptoms after sex with my uncircumcised boyfriend however previous partners who were circumcised still caused the same issue.
I think it’s genetics (no two vaginas are the same) and sometimes the position you’re in, or size of his penis can rub bacteria up to the urinary tract and cause the pain.
I get at least 5-7 of these a year so that’s considered chronic and I wanted to share that the AZO cranberry supplements (they’re like cranberry vitamins basically) work great and really flush out your system. I try to take them before (If I know I’m going to have sex) and definitely after.
I also wanted to share that I’m in France currently and it’s be recommended to me to try Rogé Cavailles or Saugella. It’s a feminine wash that doesn’t actually contain soap; it’s a mix of herbs and other essential oils, like a wash specifically to treat and protect your lady parts.
Hope this helps!
Hi Chris I am a holistically oriented MD, diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at age 19.
My GI symptoms are quite minimal over the last few years, but I do suffer from autonomic dysfunction and my excess sympathetic nervous system activity has contributed to me getting a UTI.
Thanks for the great info. I have read and commented on your site previously. It is quite obvious that you are not like most docs nor are you like many holistic docs, you actually use science to guide your therapies
The Vitamin Shoppe has a combination veggie cap that has 400 mg of Cranberry fruit concentrate, 1000 mg of D-Mannose and 60 mg of Vitamin C. It has Cranberry with D-Mannose on the bottle.
I suffer from very bad UTIS attacks. D manose works great for me. I have the suspicion that i may have ttogether wit E COLI some biofilms in my bladder. I want to know if I can take InterfasePlus or Biofilmdefense together with D manose. Will these supplements disrupt the effectiveness of D manose?? I really want to know. Please advise and many thanks!!
Sandra – have you gotten an answer to your question? I don’t see where there are answers to the questions and comments.
I’d like to know if there is a test for the biofilm kind of infection? And can you treat both kinds at the same time?
My daughter is only 6 years old and she is been on a low doze of antibiotics for over two years. the uti’s still come back (not as frequent as before, what makes her pediatrician very happy:( but obviously not me) and looks like the bacteria is getting stronger every time and more resistant to all the antibiotics. The test she had done two years ago, showed a reflux. Need to try something else, Can’t keep her in this medicine.
Alejandra, if her bug is ecoli (ask the doctors office and they will tell you) d-mannose is very effective. My doctor’s office wanted me to start IV antibiotics as I had a resistant infection. As a nurse I knew what that entailed. Potential weeks if not months of harsh antibiotics that would harm my gut killing all good flora along with the bug.
Fortunately, I asked what the bug was (ecoli) and had some d-mannose in the cupboard so I could start treatment immediately. My abdominal pain was so bad that I initially thought I’d eaten some bad food. But my husband did not get sick so I knew it was the uti. In 3 days the pain was gone and I’ve been taking it for two weeks and am currently cutting back. I have my annual Doctor appt. at the end of this month and will have it rechecked then. But I know it’s gone.
It’s a slightly sweet and I get the powder form and mix it in water. I don’t see her having a problem drinking it. And I don’t believe it will hurt her. Surely not like the antibiotics are doing.
hi where do you buy it from?
Alejandra, does your daughter take bubble baths? It may be something she needs to stop doing if she does. I think I have heard that bubble baths can cause UTI’s in young girls. Do your research.
Hello Alejandra,
i have a reflux too, well actually I had two, but on the right side it was way worse than the left. They diagnosed me when I was 4 and operated the one on the right side as soon as possible.
After that I didn’t have any problems until a few years ago (I was 18) it started again, but after several rounds of antibiotics and hospital stays I decided to get a operation on the left side to. It would have been a major surgery and that was not something I was looking forward to. Because of some problems I changed my plan and went to a different doctor and they did a non-invasive “surgery”, they injected a sugar to close the reflux.
Maybe that would be an option for your daughter 🙂
I hope she get better fast.
P.S. I’m sorry if something doesn’t make sense 😀 English isn’t my mother language
I would try Ellura, a non-prescription cranberry supplement. Works for me.
my granddaughter was on antibiotics for 6 years once a day as she had reflux issues. She finally had to have surgery, which was nasty, but no more uti since surgery.
That is really sad. Poor little girl.
May I suggest that you read a couple of web sites?
http://www.sweet-cures.com and //www.waterfall-d-mannose.com/.
Both sites are the same company, it has oodles of really good advise, you can also contact them direct, they will come back to you personally.
It is an exceptional product with wonderful service.
Good Luck!
I too have been going through chronic UTI’s following Chemo for BC two years ago. I feel bad for anyone going through this as it isn’t fun. I can’t figure out why I keep getting re-infected as I take all of the usual precautions. Even my late Father suffered from them too but he – we always assumed – was getting them from the occassional surgical Cath.
I’ve been prescribed every antibiotic sensitive to E Coli and it is still plaguing me. I recently started seeing a Naturopath along with GP – so thought I would note my medications in case anyone is interested –
Cran Mannose UTI 143mg X twice per day plus
Chimaphila Combination (Genstra Brand) 15 drops in a glass 8oz of water twice per day.
Not sure if it is working yet but I will no longer take any more antibiotics as they simply don’t work. Just for reference I also take a Probiotic from same Naturopath HMF FORTE (Genstra Brand) 10 billion.
Hi Everyone! After suffering this past year with atleast 8 UTI’S and 5 rounds of antibiotics I finally found something that has cleared my UTI thank god!!! I wanted to share this with u guys aswell…I went to Wholefoods and picked up U.T. Vibrance d- mannose powder with other botanicals by Vibrant Health. I felt better after only 24 hours….plus I’m taking probiotics. If you have UTI’s usually with Ecoli present then you should definitely try this. The powder you mix with water and drink every 3-4 hours…it tastes bad but it is the only natural thing that has helped me…Good luck 🙂
Try Cystex Plus (you can find it at Wal-Mart where they sell yeast infection products). It has methenamine in it, which has antibacterial properties. It has helped me deal with chronic bladder pain when nothing else works. And, it works quickly, within an hour or so. I have dealt with UTIs and candida for 20 years now, and it has ruined my life. But, this stuff allows me to sit without squirming from the pain/discomfort of whatever the heck I have (I have always felt that some type of organism has lodged inside my bladder and has been there for a long time, even though tests always come back negative.) Good luck to you all,
Mary
Mary you have what i have and it’s from Lyme disease. You need to see a Lyme literate doctor. They can help you. Yes i always get negative tests grin my bladder but you have Lyme bacteria in your bladder. That’s the issue.
Hi Everyone. I just came across this blog for the first time. I feel for all of you. I have been there many times. But I would like to tell you a little about what happened to me. But please please please STOP taking all these antibiotics!!! About 4 years ago I had a doctor give me a round of antibiotics for an illness. while I was taking them I then got what they THOUGHT was a UTI. So they then kept giving me different rounds of antibiotics instead of doing cultures to find out if it really was a bacterial UTI. To make a long story short they wound up giving me Leaky Gut which then caused it to go into my bloodstream. Which wound up in my bladder. I wound up at the hospital and they finally ran some urine cultures. And it was not a bacteria at all. It was a fungus called Candida!! The worst part of this whole thing is it is a very rare species called Candida “Krusei” and very resistant and hard to kill. I have gone to MANY doctors, Many different specialists and Mayo Clinic. Most doctors know nothing about it from it being so rare. And none have been able to kill it. I have taken every drug they have for this even infusing my bladder with Am B with a computerized IV pump and using everything that is natural that anyone can think of! And I am still suffering with this. Very painful!! But to all of you out there, this all can from the rounds of antibiotics that then killed off all my good gut bacteria. Which then caused Leaky gut. I take LOTS of probiotics and eat fermented foods to help fight this and get my good bacteria back. But they seem to not be able to stick in there once they caused them to be all killed. So please don’t take all those antibiotics and make sure you get cultures down so you really know what you are fighting! Is there anyone else out there that knows if they have a fungus or not?
Hi! I seem to be going thru the same thing – can I contact you via email?
If you need to have your gut “restarted” I would highly recommend 1/2 a beer in the morning and 1/2 beer in the evening. You will need to do this for about a week and you should see good results.
If you continue to have fungus, look for hyperbaric oxygen therapy in your area. However, it must be a free standing facility as hospitals will not treat your condition. HBOT is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral.
I’ve suffered with candida before but it was mainly in the gut. Also had a UTI for over a year and where previous cultures showed bacterial growth, now they all come back negative yet the pain in the bladder and lower back remain, so candida is a possibility.
Apart from the pain, have you noticed if your urine is cloudy as well?
Have you tried Spilanthes by A Vogel? This is the only herb that kills candida and works great for me. Last time I took it for a gut infection and it cleared in two months.
Hello. Can I contact you via email? I have been on antibiotics for 10 years. My body is ruined from them. Still no relief.
Please!
usnea uva ursi herbal extract.. I haven’t tried it but am about to. It says it’s one of the best things for urinary health. Anyone try it before?
Yes, I sometimes use Uva Ursi along with D-mannose when I have a UTI. I also take marshmallow root to help soothe the bladder lining. Sometimes the bad bacteria is gone but I am still feeling the pain b/c the bladder lining is irritated. Marshmallow root hopes that this.
I don’t know if you still read the comments, but yes, I did find another way out of the multiple UTI’s I’ve had. It’s dry fasting, one of the most powerful healing methods, and also always at hand and cheap. 🙂
Which is?
Please say what is helping you resolve UTIs. Prevention is one thing, but after the third UTI in three months—yikes, I need help. D-mannose us not clearing the problem. Past infections show it is e-coli. 🙁
Still searching. ….
Cayenne pepper. I tried everything under the sun, and it was the only thing that cured me.
Do you take the cayenne on an empty stomach? I saw that you drink a glass of water with it but was wondering if more effective if stomach empty of food.
I did it both ways. The first time I took it was on an empty stomach, the second time it was shortly after eating, the third time was on an empty stomach, right before bed.
It seemed to be just as efficacious, regardless, and I didn’t get a stomachache or anything when I took it on an empty stomach.
Just go right ahead!
Just found this website. I’ve been fighting E Coli UTI for three months. The first time I was given antibiotics for three days. It came back and I was put on antibiotics for five days and now it is back again, and this time it was the day after we left for vacation! I would like to know what are the foods that I should be avoiding as I was not aware that this would make it worse.
Coffee and chocolate can make symptoms worse. Which is hard for me because I love coffee.
I just put out 100 dollars and ordered all the recommended helps for UTI’s helps D Mannose, InterFase Plus, Biofilm Defense and Lauricidin.
Can I freeze these until needed? Will they go bad if I don’t need it or can they be used for other infections. I am prone to UTI’s and Colloidal Silver usually is what I have used. This past week it didn’t work and I succumbed to Keflex the only antibiotic I am not allergic to thus far. I just learned about you Chris and your helpful suggestions. Can these helps be used for other conditions and what is the shelf life if I don’t need them for some time. Will they still be good in a year or two or more?
Other than d-mannose, I do not see any suggested amounts/frequency for the other suggested items—lactoferrin, nattokinase, or Biofilm Defense.
Chris, my question is can I take the InterFase Plus indefinitely? I get UTI’s that are not E-Coli. They’ve been staph and strep and one was Klebsiella strains. I went over 2 years without with using D-Mannose before and after intercourse and taking silver water for a few days after but then this year I have had two a few months apart so the silver water is not working as my naturopath has stated. I was so hoping it was the cure all. I take 2000 of Ester C, garlic and I’ve ordered the InterFase Plus. Is this enough to take to avoid anymore so I don’t have to resort in taking an antiobiotic each time I have intercourse as the urologist wanted me to do and I haven’t as I just don’t want to go down that road if I can help it. Like others I am diligent in washing before and after intercourse and void before and after. Doesn’t seem to matter and very frustrating. Thank you for any help.
One Urologist I went to told me to go to the bathroom just before and immediately after intercourse to help prevent UTI
Hey everyone,
I have suffered from chronic UTIs for about 8 years now. It’s been a long, painful and frustrating ride and there seems to be no end in sight. I also urinate excessively (about 5 to 8 times an hour on really bad days), have kidney pain that feels like somebody jams a knife into my flank and I cannot have intercourse with my husband because it is a GUARANTEED UTI. I have taken Cipro, Levo, Bactrim, Nitrofuratoin…everything u can think of. However, every time my doctor performs a culture there seems to be no growth except for flora. I am at the end of my tether. I am now trying natural approaches such as cornsilk tea which has helped with the kidney pain but right now I feel that I am coming down with a UTI again and I’m definitely experiencing bad kidney pain. My urologist says that I probably have interstitial cystitis and she may be right since I cannot drink anything but water without having painful flareups. I am only 27 years old and this has RUINED MY LIFE. I have tried D-Mannose and it seemed to help but I’m not sure what the proper dosage for that is in order to keep myself from getting UTIs. I just wish I could find something natural to help me prevent any UTIs, especially after having intercourse. I feel like I’m not living.
My heart goes out to everyone, I know how big of an emotional, mental, and physical impact UTIs have…especially chronic ones.
I think apart from the physical care we really have to have a strong mind. Write down affirmations such as ” I am healthy ” and say them out loud everyday…say them like you mean it!Our minds have such a strong power to change or current condition. Meditation and taking time to be alone to clear our minds is very helpful.
I suggest you guys do as much inner (spiritual) work as you are on the physical .
Now in addition to that, I would like to recommend you to try collaidal silver.it’s nature’s antibiotic. Do you own research on dosage (or talk to a health consultant at the health store )and see if it resonates with you. It has worked for me!
I also drink corn silk, marshmallow root, and uva ursi tea. My diet is 60% raw vegan 40% cooked vegan.
These lifestyle changes really helped me beyond any antibiotics.
Doctors never treat the root cause and will do nothing for you in these regards but give you more prescriptions. Go back to the ancient ways… treat yourself and believe in the healing powers your body has.
Much love to you all, you can and will overcome this.
I tried the uva ursi tea last night, and within two hours I was beginning to have increased pain. Today I feel horrible. I cannot seem to tolerate any of the herbs thus far. When this flare calms down I may try gotu kola as I it is suppose to help the GAG of the bladder rebuild. I am sure mine is weakened as a result of seven bladder infections that I have had since June. I agree with you about the spiritual journey, or more to point a mind body connection. I just am having a hard time focusing with this pain.
Go take a look at diet and stress. Under stress alters hormone balance and increases histamine response in the body. Histamine can make skin itchy and cause inflammation. Look at fodmaps and learn to breathe deep and relax. Breathing deeply will reduce histamine response. Our bodies are on stress overload. You must read up.
Ana, go check out Dr. Mercola’s site at http://www.mercola.com. He breaks down the doses of D-Mannose. But truthfully, with no positive cultures you probably are wasting your time with the D-Mannose. However, type in interstitial cystitis. He’s a holistic doctor too.
Hi, I highly recommend to try completely alkaline diet for a week or so. It healed my uti’s once and for all.
Great resource is the book of dr Young.
Just wondering what the name of Dr. Young’s book is Sophia?
Dear Chris, thank you for your input about UTI’s. I’ve been having UTI’s all the time. As soon as the antibiotic wears off I get another one. They had to put me in the hospital with an IV because the antibiotic didn’t work any more. I am on levofloxacin 500 mg right now which I had a refill. I had to take it because we were driving to Florida the next day. The last time I had a UTI was in Florida and I had to wait 5 was to see a specialist because I was a new patience. I’ll be seeing her while I’m here because it was schedule from my last vist. I did look up on the web to take something natural and I purchased cranberry & D-mannose. I have 3 more antibiotic pills left and I still have dis-comfort. Can I take D-mannose w/antibiotic. I will appreciate any help you can give me. I feel I’m causing more damage by myself by taking all these antibiotics. Karen October 12th
D manose and uristatin. You can get uristatin on Amazon. Three pills three times a day works great.

They say to take the D-Mannose every 2-3 hours (500mg.) for 5 days. Hope this helps.
Ana,
Please I recommend you find a good functional nutritionist and or natrapathic Dr. to work with sounds like all those antibiotics and totally wiped out all your bacteria resulting is massive systemic inflammation…you need professional help with the slow and steady gut healing and bacteria balancing but you can you do it! Keep up with the herbs like cornsilk too.
Hi Ana,
can you give me your email address? I’d like to speak with you on this as well. I feel the same!
Yes, my email is [email protected]
I was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis after many doctors, tests, ultrasounds, etc. I got a uti once a month for over a year. One day, my coworker mentioned that her daughter changed brands of pads because what she was using gave her dermatitis that FELT like a uti. I switched brands of condoms and did not have another uti for for 11 years. (I have one now, but I’m pregnant and more susceptible)
What pads and condoms do you use now?
Ladies, Do some research on making Kefir for the strongest natural antibiotic you can possibly get without side effects. It strengthens your immune system like nothing else can. Try this website: http://www.culturedfoodlife.com and more information on http://www.mercola.com for making cultured vegetables and komboucha which are extremely helpful for strengthening the gut flora.
I tried Kefir and had a horrible flare, so watch out if you are sensitive to foods that are fermented.
I had the same problem: getting a UTI everytime my husband and I had intercourse. The Dr. finally tested my husband for a UTI and found that we were re-infecting each other! We both got treatment and hurray! no more UTI’s.
I have a UTI, so I began treating myself at home with d-mannose. After an intense day of taking it faithfully every two hours, I had a seizure in the middle of the night. The doctor in the ER thought that the d-mannose may have lowered my phosphorous levels, thus causing the seizure. Is this possible? I am desperate to find the cause, as I have never had a seizure before in my life. I am also 5 weeks post-partum. My MRI came back completely normal, and I have an upcoming appointment with a neurologist. I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about d-mannose and its effect on phosphorous in the body. Thank you.
I never suffered from UTIs until I became sexually active. Ever since I get ther once or twice a month…
I always take the typical precausions (glass of water before, washroom before and after, proper hygene, hydration) yet I still get therm.
