UTIs can be caused by poor hygiene, impaired immune function, the overuse of antibiotics, the use of spermicides, and sexual intercourse. The most common cause, accounting for about 90 percent of all cases, is the transfer of Escherichia coli bacteria from the intestinal tract to the urinary tract.
For those of you who have experienced a UTI, there isn’t much you wouldn’t do to avoid another one. While I personally have never had a UTI, my patients have told me how symptoms like pain, burning, nausea, and even bloody urine can be debilitating, and for those who get chronic UTIs, the fear of infection can be enough to prevent engagement in any activities that could trigger one. For people who get them frequently, sometimes a specific cause cannot even be pinpointed. This can be frustrating and scary.
Fortunately, there are a few methods of natural UTI treatment and prevention that have worked extremely well for my patients, to the point where they no longer worry about getting a UTI.
These treatments don’t require a prescription, are inexpensive, and are completely drug-free. While your doctor may not know about them, I hope this article will help you completely avoid UTIs—or at least significantly reduce their frequency and severity. I recommend working with a Functional Medicine practitioner who is focused on treating the root cause of your UTIs.

What Is the Standard Treatment for a UTI?
Doctors typically use antibiotics to treat UTIs, and the type and duration depend on your health condition and the type of bacterium found in your urine. (2) Commonly prescribed antibiotics are:
- Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim)
- Amoxicillin
- Ampicillin
- Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
These antibiotics are often unnecessary and may cause more problems in the future by destroying the beneficial bacteria that prevent pathogenic bacteria from growing. Long-term use of antibiotics can also lead to antibiotic resistance in strains of bacteria like E. coli in the gut, and a UTI caused by these bacteria will be even more challenging to eliminate and can cause more serious issues like a kidney or bladder infection.
Furthermore, antibiotics do very little to prevent the infection from happening in the first place. So, while drugs may be an easy fix for the short term, in the long run, you will continue to be susceptible to UTIs, and these infections may be worse than if you had never taken a course of antibiotics in the first place!
Curing and Preventing UTIs Naturally: D-Mannose
Treating UTIs with D-Mannose
D-mannose is by far the most effective supplement for both treatment and prevention of UTIs. Similar to glucose in structure, D-mannose is a naturally occurring sugar that is found in a number of fruits, including apples, blueberries, and cranberries. (3) This sugar is the reason that cranberry juice has been commonly recommended as a UTI treatment, though it is far easier to get the recommended dosage from a supplement. D-mannose is effective because it attaches to E. coli bacteria, causing them to stick to each other and preventing them from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract. (4) The bacteria can then easily be eliminated from the body during urination.
D-mannose, even in large quantities, does not cause any adverse effects, and cannot be metabolized the way other sugars can, meaning this supplement is safe for people with diabetes and others who are avoiding sugar for any reason. This treatment is also safe for children and the elderly.
Symptom relief can be seen as quickly as the following day, and most symptoms of UTI are generally resolved after 48 hours of treatment. Additionally, taking D-mannose during a time where you feel you are most prone to UTIs, such as before intercourse or during prolonged antibiotic treatment, can help prevent a UTI from ever developing in the first place. This is especially helpful for those who are prone to chronic UTIs and want to be able to engage in normal life activities without fear of infection.
The typical dose of D-mannose for UTI treatment is 500 mg, in capsule or powder form, taken with or in a glass of water or juice every two to three hours for five days. It is a good practice to continue taking the supplement even after symptoms have diminished to ensure complete elimination of the bacteria in the urinary tract. This dose can also be taken as a preventive, or prophylactic, method.
While there has not been any peer-reviewed research to support the effectiveness of D-mannose in treating or preventing UTIs, clinical and anecdotal experience suggests it is highly effective for the majority of infections, both acute and chronic. Some of my patients who have used D-mannose as a UTI treatment method have even described its effects as “miraculous”—so it’s definitely worth a shot!

Four Alternative Treatments for Chronic UTIs
One caveat with D-mannose is that it is only effective with UTIs caused by E. coli infection. While this accounts for about 90 percent of cases, 10 percent will not benefit from this treatment. In this case, supplements that help disrupt biofilms can be useful in treating and preventing UTIs.
Biofilms are an accumulation of microorganisms and their extracellular products forming structured communities attached to a surface such as the lining of the urogenital tract. (5) The development of a biofilm can make infections extremely hard to treat, since they commonly return shortly after treatment is stopped.
The antibacterial resistance of pathogenic biofilms is one of the major reasons why those who get a UTI are highly susceptible to getting more in the future—if the biofilm is not completely eliminated, the infection will eventually return at some point.
1. InterFase Plus and Biofilm Defense
This is why the use of biofilm disruptors can be helpful for preventing the recurrence of chronic UTIs. The biofilm disruptors that I recommend to my patients are InterFase Plus from Klaire Labs or Biofilm Defense from Kirkman. These contain specialized enzymes to disrupt the biofilm matrix embedding potential of pathogens, and dissolve the sugar and fibrin components of most pathogenic biofilms. By destroying the biofilms, the recurrence of UTIs despite proper hygiene can be reduced. (6)
2. Lauricidin
Lauricidin is another supplement that may help in treating UTIs, particularly those that are caused by types of bacteria other than E. coli. Lauricidin (a proprietary form of monolaurin) has antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial activity, and is specific against pathogenic bacteria so it won’t disrupt beneficial bacteria in the gut. It is highly effective at combating gram-positive bacteria in the families of: (7)
- Streptococcus
- Staphylococcus
- Corynebacterium
- Listeria
- Bacillus
- Clostridium
It works by disturbing the integrity of the bacterial cell membrane, blocking replication and making it easier for the immune system to destroy the pathogen. Lauricidin is only helpful, however, for UTIs not caused by E. coli, which is gram-negative and has a different kind of outer cell membrane than gram-positive bacteria.
3. Nattokinase
Nattokinase is another enzyme that has been shown to dissolve biofilms. (8) Produced by the bacteria found in the fermented food natto, this enzyme is proteolytic and can help break down the fibrin proteins that maintain the structure of biofilms.
Because of its fibrin-breaking ability, it’s important that nattokinase supplements are not taken by people with bleeding disorders, or by people who are taking Coumadin (warfarin), aspirin, or any other drug that influences blood clotting, unless supervised by a physician.
4. Apolactoferrin
Apolactoferrin (or lactoferrin) is one more supplement that I recommend to my patients with recurrent UTIs. This multifunctional protein lactoferrin is a component of the immune system with antimicrobial activity, and is part of the innate defense, found mainly in secretions and mucosal surfaces. (9)
Lactoferrin has been shown to block pathogenic biofilm development by binding to iron and causing the bacteria to “wander” across surfaces instead of forming cell clusters and biofilms. (10, 11) One study found that the amount of E. coli bacteria in the kidneys and bladder of mice was significantly reduced 24 hours after oral lactoferrin treatment, compared to a control group. (12) More research is necessary to demonstrate the effectiveness of lactoferrin in treating UTIs, but I believe it is worth trying, especially if dealing with chronic UTIs.

Go to the nearest health food store and buy several bottles of olive leaf extract (powdered form in a capsule, 20% oleuropein) and a jar of coconut oil.
Take 2 olive leaf capsules every two hours for two days. Then every four hours for 5 days. (Have your SO take 5 a day for a week)
Every evening at dinner time, take two teaspoons of coconut oil and put it in a small dish. Open an olive leaf capsule and empty into the dish with the coconut oil. Put the dish in a warm spot, like the oven with the light on. You want the coconut oil to melt and stay melted for several hours, at about 85 degrees.
Before you go to bed, spoon that melted oil into a mold made of aluminum foil. You’re going for a bullet-shape, because this is a vaginal suppository. Put it in the freezer for 10 minutes.
Wear a pad, insert that magic bullet, and sleep on your side.
Do this every night for the entire week of treatment.

I found this post while looking for cure ideas, and then when I tried cayenne and it worked, I posted about it in case it helped other people looking for a cure.
Woke up in the middle of the night and knew exactly what I was feeling. I drano a little acv and baking soda in water, symptoms were relieved and I was able to go back to sleep. I’m taking d mannose and drinking pure cranberry juice every 3 hours, also bought some probiotics. What else can I do to ensure this goes away without me having to resort to antibiotics. Should I also try cayenne pepper? I’m going on vacation in a few days and would hate for this uti to not be gone while I’m away.
If you don’t have a history of being negatively affected by peppers, I would try a dose of cayenne and see what happens.
If you can’t take cayenne, get olive leaf extract and take two every four hours. Also, get activated charcoal capsules and take several of them right before bed, with a large glass of water.
Please help. I tried the baking soda and cayenne pepper remedy and it KILLED my stomach. Does that happen to anyone else? Then I tried taking only an 1/8th tsp of cayenne and it still gave me severe pain. So I had to stop that. Now I’m going to try D-mannose plus Apple Cider Vinegar (plus probiotics). Okay, it sounds like you might have an infection of some sort in your stomach, for it to hurt like that. Or you have a very acidic system…
I would try olive leaf extract, about five 500 mg capsules a day for two days. It’s a potent anti-bacterial/fungal that should knock the day lights out of the pathogens cayenne was killing with fire.
Meanwhile, take two activated charcoal tablets each night before bed, with a big glass of water. This alkalinizes your system, which discourages the infection and will soothe any kind of stomach upset. Do NOT skip this step.
Trust me, you’ll be astonished at the results.
I have a UTI. The bacteria isn’t e.coli. It’s Klebisella. I was just prescribed cipro. I don’t want to take it. I read that D-Mannose doesn’t work with other bacteria. Any suggestions?

My 20month old son was diagnosed with posterior urethral valves. He has had numerous utis from birth. After 2 surgeries to clear the valves he is still experiencing these infections. The first thing that comes to mind is to hide olive leaf extract in his food, like in the middle of something thick, like yogurt or cottage cheese. I used that last week for my 3 yr old when she was coming down with a bacterial infection of the sinuses; it cleared her up completely, overnight. I opened up a capsule, dropped about a third of it into the middle of a tsp of ricotta cheese, and she swallowed it without a murmur.

If you give him that regularly, I think it would be a sufficient prophylactic measure to keep him clear of infection. You could probably just dust a pinch of it over a spoonful of food 3x a week; it’ll also protect him from colds and other infections.
The good news is that a very little goes a long way with the young, and the bad news is that hard data is hard to find because doctors don’t generally care to try out natural remedies on babies..but as a parent you want to give them things that are as gentle and natural as possible. (I have five children, myself. I totally understand.)
I woke up at 3 am today with that “gotta pee” feeling. After a trip to the bathroom and no relief, I knew instantly what it was and took 3 ibuprofen. Stumbled upon this website looking for a home remedy for a UTI. By 4 am, the pain and pressure in my tummy was intense. After reading all the cayenne pepper results in the comments, figured it was worth a shot. Found a bottle of it in the pantry…3 years expired. Whatever, I was willing to risk it to save a trip to the walk-in clinic. I made a bread pellet stuffed with 1/4 tsp of cayenne per a suggestion. Took two bites to eat the whole thing and downed it with 24 oz of water. Yeah it was spicy. Yeah I choked a little inhaling a breath of the powder, but within 45 minutes I felt so much better. Four hours later I heaped cayenne on to the 1/4 tsp, made another bread pellet and drank another 24 oz of water. It is now 9 hours since my first symptom of that urge to urinate and I feel 97% better after 2 doses of the cayenne and lots of water. I’m going to do it again two more times today, then repeat for the next few days. I didn’t have any side effects other than a warm feeling throughout my body and a little gas. Cayenne did not irritate my stomach. I never had a burning sensation when urinating and still don’t. I haven’t had to take any more ibuprofen either. That’s my story for those who are wondering if it really works. It did for me. I’m so glad I found this sight. Thanks for the amazing tip Bekah!

I’ve been trying the Cayenne and Baking Soda for the past 36 hrs. It’s killing my stomach. Take: activated charcoal (tablet or mixed into water), baking soda, lemon juice in water to raise the pH so they can’t feed and breed in your bladder. Mix and match those, or do them all in rotation. (Take the charcoal at night before bed, at least 2 hours after your last meal. Take nothing else with it but water.
My 10 yr old daughter just had her first UTI, and I gave her lemon water to drink all day long, a minced clove of raw garlic with every meal, and cayenne pepper 4x a day.

I had a doctor tell me the sinus’ and bladder fall on the same body meridian. Therefore, many people who get an upper resperitory infection will also get a bladder infection at the same time. Mysteriously developed UTI one month ago after not having one for 30 years. Took a German herbal remedy for one day (from a friend) which relieved symptoms almost immediately) and then 5 days of d-Mannose. UTI returned about a month later. Took the same German remedy, but for 3 days and began a more intensive round of d-Mannose. After 2 days, I am having back pain. The smell of the infection is gone, the urge to urinate is less. But urine is scant though completely clear. Am worried that the kidney pain is either due to the d-Mannose (some sites say that large amounts can damage the kidneys) or infection spread to kidneys. I don’t have a fever, and other than the back ache and scant urine, have no other symptom. I am going try cayenne, but am concerned because I have allergic reactions to hot peppers such as cayenne and black pepper. Any thoughts?

Just wanted to say the baking soda ideas mentioned here can be dangerous. I was reading on several different websites about the uses of baking soda and they mentioned many people end up in the ER from taking too much baking soda for UTI’s.
Those doctors who recommend taking baking soda for certain health conditions (including cancer prevention), recommend only using 2-teaspoons in 2-cups of water. Then one sips that mixture throughout the day.
I’ve had a UTI since Thursday. I came across this post because I don’t have insurance and can’t keep paying to go to the little clinic every time I get a UTI (which is frequently). I’ve been taking the cayenne pepper since Friday but still have symptoms. It doesn’t hurt as bad as it typically would but sometimes it’s uncomfortable. Sometimes it doesn’t even hurt at all. But my urine is very cloudy and smells terrible. Should I be having these symptoms after 3 days of taking the cayenne? And I also don’t know where to find d-mannose. I tried Walmart and cvs neither have it.
Hi Lauren, it sounds like you still have a uti and probably need to get medication just to kill it off. Then maybe the cayenne pepper and D-Mannose can prevent a future one. D-Mannose can only be found in stores like Vitamin Cottage, Sprouts, Whole Foods, etc. Those stores should also sell empty pill capsules that can be filled with cayenne pepper so it’s easier to take. Feel better!

I found something called clear tract from the cvs website that is supposed to be 100% d-mannose. I’m going to try to find it today at my local cvs. You can also order it on amazon. I have the same insurance issues as you. Good luck finding it.

If you are having cloudy urine and it has an odor, you could have a kidney infection. I would see a doctor as soon as possible because you probably need antibiotics.

Thank you Bekah! I have a uti right now and also found your cayenne pepper tip to be really helpful. I found the easiest way to take it is to mix it with a spoonful of honey. I also have been taking candibactin ar (oregano and thyme) and candibactin br (berberine) and those seem to be helping a lot as well. Lots of D-mannose too.
I’ve had frequent uti’s since 18 (now 25) but found d-mannose to be extremely helpful for uti prevention. Last saturday I contracted a uti for the first time in a year. I was prescribed 5 days of bactrim which I completed. But now this saturday (today) I’ve contracted another uti so I’ve been prescribed 10 days of bactrim. I started taking cayenne pepper last night and I think it has made a big difference because I seem to be experiencing much less pain than I normally do with a uti. The pain/urgency is usually 8-9/10 but today it was only 3-4/10. I’m so grateful! I’ll still take azo for two days to make sure I don’t feel any pain at all, and I’d also like to try the biofilm dissolvers described in the article. But I’m very confident that the cayenne pepper and candibactins will help me to fight off future infections.

I took bactrim for a UTI and after 6 days had terrible leg aches (muscle pain) and lower leg muscle twitches. This medicine messed me up. Stay clear of this and CIPRO. Bad stuff. Plus it does nothing to stop you from having one again.
BTW, 6 months have passed and I still have thigh muscle issues. I have had blood work and have seen a specialist. They say nothing is wrong. I know it was the pills. It started while I was taking them.
Luckily it is slowly improving and if I stretch out my legs and walk a lot, it helps. Not worth the risk. Avoid antibiotics.
